What ice on the coil is actually telling you
A frozen evaporator coil is a symptom, never the root problem. The indoor coil is supposed to run cold and pull heat out of the air moving across it. When too little warm air passes over that coil, or when refrigerant pressure drops too low, the coil surface falls below freezing and condensation turns to frost. Frost blocks airflow, which makes it colder still, and within an hour you have a solid block. That is why the air from your vents gets weak and barely cool while the outdoor unit keeps running. Left alone, the ice melts into places the drain pan was not designed to catch, and long runs in that condition are hard on the compressor.
Cause family one: airflow, the cheapest and most common
Most frozen coils we open up across California, Arizona and Nevada come down to airflow. A loaded filter is the usual suspect, especially after a windy stretch or a remodel. Closed or blocked supply vents, furniture over a return grille, and a crushed or disconnected flex duct in the attic all do the same thing. Plenty of tract homes were built with returns too small for the system they now carry, so the margin for a dirty filter is thin. Add a blower wheel packed with dust or a blower running at the wrong speed and airflow drops far enough to ice the coil on a normal afternoon. Airflow problems are the fix we most often complete in one visit.
Cause family two and three: a dirty coil, then refrigerant
If the filter is clean and the vents are open, the coil itself may be the restriction. Fins pack with dust, pet hair and drywall fines and turn into a felt mat that air will not pass through. That needs proper cleaning, not poking at it. The next family is refrigerant. Low charge means low pressure, low pressure means a colder coil, and low charge almost always means a leak somewhere in the line set, coil or fittings. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak just buys a few months. Refrigerant work is not homeowner work, and there is nothing safe for you to check on that side. A failing metering device or a weak blower motor rounds out the list.
What you can safely check yourself
Shut cooling off at the thermostat and switch the fan to ON. That pushes room air across the coil and thaws it faster than leaving everything off, and it keeps the compressor from running against a blocked coil. While it thaws, change the filter if it looks gray or you cannot remember the last one. Walk the house and open every supply register, and pull furniture, boxes or drapes off the return grilles. Check the breaker if the unit went dead. Look at the outdoor unit and clear leaves, cuttings and trash bags away from the sides. Wipe up standing water near the air handler. Stop there. Do not open refrigerant lines, do not remove panels, and do not chip at ice with anything.
What a technician does differently
We measure instead of guess. Once the coil is clear we take static pressure and temperature split to see whether the blower is actually moving the air the system needs, then check the blower wheel, the speed tap or motor programming, and the return sizing. On the refrigerant side we read suction and liquid pressures, calculate superheat and subcooling, and if the numbers say low charge we look for the leak rather than just topping off. We inspect the metering device and the drain, since a frozen coil often plugs a condensate line on the way to melting. How long does a frozen coil take to thaw?
With cooling off and the fan set to ON, usually one to three hours depending on how much ice built up and how warm the house is. A heavy freeze can take longer. Never speed it up with heat or a sharp tool.
Can I just run it and let the ice melt while it cools?
No. Running the compressor against a blocked coil floods it with liquid refrigerant and can damage it. Turn cooling off, run the fan, let the coil thaw completely, then try one cycle and watch what happens.
It froze once and now works fine. Do I still need a visit?
Usually yes. If a dirty filter caused it and the new filter fixed it, you may be fine. If it froze on a clean filter, something else restricted airflow or the charge is low, and it will happen again.
