AC Not Cooling

If your AC is running but the air coming out of the vents feels warm or barely cool, that is the job we are describing here. We diagnose and repair air conditioners that turn on and never bring the house down to temperature, across California, Arizona and Nevada. Before you call, check the thermostat is set to cool, change a loaded filter, look for a tripped breaker, and clear leaves or trash away from the outdoor unit. If it still will not cool, reach out and we will come look at it.

Whether you call it an AC not cooling or air conditioner blowing warm air, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.

What an AC Not Cooling Call Involves

We start at the thermostat and work outward, because "not cooling" covers a lot of ground. A blower that runs with a dead outdoor unit points one direction. Cold air at the closest vent and nothing at the back bedroom points somewhere else entirely. We measure temperature across the coil, watch how the system starts, and check airflow through the return. In a lot of stucco tract homes the return is simply too small for the tonnage, so the system runs long and never satisfies. We tell you which of those it is before we touch anything.

What We Check and Repair

Common findings include a failed capacitor or contactor, a burned out condenser fan motor, a dirty condenser coil packed with dust and cottonwood, a frozen evaporator coil from restricted airflow, a clogged filter nobody could reach, closed or crushed ducts, and low refrigerant from a leak. Refrigerant and high voltage work stays with us. We also look at duct connections in the attic, since a separated boot in a hot attic dumps your cool air where it does no good. Repairs get quoted before we start.

How We Decide Repair Is the Right Call

We weigh the age of the equipment, the cost of the part, and whether the same failure has happened before. A capacitor on a ten year old condenser is an easy yes. A compressor on a system with a leaking coil and rust at the base is a harder conversation, and we will lay out both paths instead of pushing one. Marine layer mornings hide a weak system until the inland heat arrives, so we test under real load when we can and give you our honest read.

AC Not Cooling — quick answers

My AC runs all day and the house still will not cool. Is that low refrigerant?

Sometimes, but not always. Restricted airflow, a dirty condenser coil, duct leaks in a hot attic, or an undersized return can all cause the same symptom. We measure before we assume a leak.

Why is there ice on the copper line at my indoor unit?

Ice usually means airflow is restricted or refrigerant charge is off. Turn the system to fan only so it can thaw, change the filter, and call us. Running it iced up can damage the compressor.

The outdoor unit is silent but air is blowing inside. What failed?

That pattern often points to a capacitor, contactor, condenser fan motor, or a tripped breaker on the outdoor circuit. Check the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and let us diagnose it.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you notice. Warm air, no air, short cycling, a smell, a noise. Details like when it started help us bring the right parts on the first visit.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the return sizing. We test rather than guess, then explain what failed and why in plain language before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then measure temperatures and airflow at the vents to confirm the system holds. If a duct or return is starving the equipment, we tell you what it would take to fix it.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know stucco tract homesMuch of the housing we service was built fast with returns too small for the tonnage installed. That single duct in the hallway explains a lot of weak airflow complaints, and we look at it before we sell you equipment.
  • Marine mornings, inland afternoonsCoastal condos fight humidity and salt air, while inland homes run long afternoon cycles in triple digits. Same system, different failure patterns. We set expectations for the climate your house actually sits in.
  • Diagnosis you can followYou get told which part failed, what it does and what happens if it waits. No hurry, no scare talk. If the honest answer is that the system has a few seasons left, we say that.
  • Repair before replacementMost calls end in a repair, not a new system. We quote replacement only when a repair will not hold or the cost stops making sense, and we explain the reasoning either way.
  • All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
