AC Compressor Repair

We repair and replace failed AC compressors for homeowners across Arizona, California and Nevada, and we diagnose the electrical parts around the compressor that usually cause the failure in the first place. You need this work when the outdoor unit hums but will not start, trips the breaker, or blows warm air while the fan keeps spinning. Turn the system off at the thermostat so it stops trying to restart, then call us. Running a struggling compressor makes a repairable problem into a replacement.

What AC compressor repair actually involves

The compressor is the pump that moves refrigerant through your air conditioning system. It sits in the outdoor unit and it is the part everything else depends on. Repair work usually means one of two paths. Either we replace the components feeding it, such as the capacitor, contactor, or hard start kit, and the compressor runs again, or the compressor itself has failed internally and needs to come out. We recover refrigerant properly, test the circuit under load, and confirm the reason it failed before putting anything new in.

What we check before touching the compressor

We start with the electrical side, because a compressor rarely dies on its own. We read voltage and amp draw at the unit, check the capacitor and contactor, and test the windings for a short or an open. Then we look at refrigerant charge, suction and liquid line temperatures, and airflow through the indoor coil. Restricted returns and clogged filters cook compressors slowly, and undersized return ducts are common in tract homes across the region. We also clear debris and check the condenser coil for airflow blockage.

How we decide repair or replacement

We weigh the age of the system, the condition of the coil and refrigerant type, and whether the failure was electrical or internal. A bad capacitor on an otherwise healthy unit is a straightforward air conditioner repair. A grounded compressor in an older system with a leaking coil is a different conversation, and we will say so plainly. We show you the readings we took, explain what caused the failure, and give you options in writing so you decide without guessing.

AC Compressor Repair — quick answers

Can a bad AC compressor be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

Internally failed compressors get replaced, not rebuilt. But many calls that look like compressor failure are a capacitor, contactor, or wiring fault, and those are repaired the same day in most cases.

Why does my outdoor unit hum and then shut off?

That usually means the compressor is trying to start and cannot. A weak capacitor, a stuck contactor, or high head pressure are common causes. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call us before more start attempts.

Will my whole AC system need replacing if the compressor fails?

Not always. If the coil, blower, and lineset are in good shape and refrigerant is still available for your system, a compressor replacement can be the practical call. We measure first and show you what we found.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you notice. Warm air, no air, short cycling, a smell, a noise. Details like when it started help us bring the right parts on the first visit.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the return sizing. We test rather than guess, then explain what failed and why in plain language before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then measure temperatures and airflow at the vents to confirm the system holds. If a duct or return is starving the equipment, we tell you what it would take to fix it.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know stucco tract homesMuch of the housing we service was built fast with returns too small for the tonnage installed. That single duct in the hallway explains a lot of weak airflow complaints, and we look at it before we sell you equipment.
  • Marine mornings, inland afternoonsCoastal condos fight humidity and salt air, while inland homes run long afternoon cycles in triple digits. Same system, different failure patterns. We set expectations for the climate your house actually sits in.
  • Diagnosis you can followYou get told which part failed, what it does and what happens if it waits. No hurry, no scare talk. If the honest answer is that the system has a few seasons left, we say that.
  • Repair before replacementMost calls end in a repair, not a new system. We quote replacement only when a repair will not hold or the cost stops making sense, and we explain the reasoning either way.
  • All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
