What the job involves
A capacitor stores the jolt of energy a motor needs to start and keeps it turning smoothly. When it weakens, the motor draws too much current and either stalls or overheats. We shut off power at the disconnect and the breaker, discharge the capacitor safely, and confirm the reading against the rating printed on the can. If the motor itself has failed bearings or a burnt winding, we match a replacement to the horsepower, voltage, rotation and mount, then set the blade at the correct depth in the shroud.
What we check and install
We test the capacitor under load, check amp draw on the motor, and look at the contactor and wiring, because pitted contacts and heat-damaged terminals often show up in the same repair. On the indoor side we inspect the blower wheel for dust buildup that adds drag, and we look at return sizing, since a starved return makes a blower work harder than it was built to. Parts we install include run and dual-run capacitors, condenser fan motors, blower motors, and the hardware and wiring that goes with them.
How we decide it is the right call
We only swap a part after a reading tells us it is out of spec. A capacitor that measures well below its rating gets replaced. A motor that spins freely and draws normal current usually does not. If the motor is seized, smells burnt, or has failed bearings you can hear as a growl, replacement is the honest answer. When the compressor is also failing or the coil is leaking refrigerant, we tell you that first, so you can weigh a repair against a system replacement instead of paying twice.

Why does my outdoor unit hum without the fan turning?
That is a classic weak or failed capacitor, though a seized motor does the same thing. Shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops straining and call us. We will test both before replacing anything.
Can a bad capacitor damage the motor?
Yes. A motor trying to start on a weak capacitor pulls high current and runs hot, which shortens the life of its windings and bearings. Catching it early often saves the motor entirely.
How long does the replacement take?
Most capacitor swaps are done in a single visit once we have tested the system. Fan motor replacement depends on matching horsepower, voltage and rotation. If we carry the match, we finish the same day.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form with what you notice. Warm air, no air, short cycling, a smell, a noise. Details like when it started help us bring the right parts on the first visit.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the return sizing. We test rather than guess, then explain what failed and why in plain language before any work starts.
- Step 3
Repair and verify
We make the repair, then measure temperatures and airflow at the vents to confirm the system holds. If a duct or return is starving the equipment, we tell you what it would take to fix it.

Why homeowners call us
- We know stucco tract homesMuch of the housing we service was built fast with returns too small for the tonnage installed. That single duct in the hallway explains a lot of weak airflow complaints, and we look at it before we sell you equipment.
- Marine mornings, inland afternoonsCoastal condos fight humidity and salt air, while inland homes run long afternoon cycles in triple digits. Same system, different failure patterns. We set expectations for the climate your house actually sits in.
- Diagnosis you can followYou get told which part failed, what it does and what happens if it waits. No hurry, no scare talk. If the honest answer is that the system has a few seasons left, we say that.
- Repair before replacementMost calls end in a repair, not a new system. We quote replacement only when a repair will not hold or the cost stops making sense, and we explain the reasoning either way.
- All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
- Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
