Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle faults on homes across Arizona, California and Nevada, so your outdoor unit sheds frost instead of turning into a block of ice. Call us if the outdoor coil stays iced over on a cool morning, the unit runs long stretches without warming the house, or you hear the reversing valve clunk again and again with no heat coming out. Set the thermostat to off, leave the ice alone, and let us look. Melting it with hot water or a tool bends fins and cracks tubing.

What defrost repair actually involves

A heat pump in heating mode runs the outdoor coil colder than the air around it, so moisture freezes on it. The defrost cycle reverses the system for a few minutes, warms that coil, and drains the melt away. When it fails, ice builds until airflow chokes off. We confirm the system is genuinely stuck, read the defrost board and its sensors, watch a full cycle, and correct the part that will not initiate or will not terminate. Then we verify drainage under the unit.

What we check on site

We start with the defrost thermostat or coil sensor, since a drifted sensor is a common reason a cycle never starts. We check the defrost control board timing, the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan and its relay, and refrigerant pressures that mimic a defrost fault. We look at the drain path and the pad, because a unit sitting in standing water refreezes from the bottom up. Restricted airflow from a clogged filter or a blocked coil gets ruled out first.

How we decide it is the right call

Iced coils have more than one cause, so we do not sell a board before we prove it. If the sensor reads accurately and the board sequences correctly, the problem is usually low charge, a leaking reversing valve, or airflow. If the board never sends the signal, we replace it. On older systems we tell you plainly when repeated defrost failures point to a worn compressor or a leak that keeps returning, and what a replacement conversation would look like.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is some frost on my outdoor unit normal in winter?

A light coat of frost during a heating run is normal. It should clear within a cycle. Thick ice covering the coil, the fan blades, or the top grille means the defrost cycle is not finishing its job.

Why does my heat pump blow cool air for a few minutes?

That is often the defrost cycle running in reverse to melt the coil, and it is normal. If cool air lasts far longer or repeats constantly without warming the house, the cycle is not terminating and needs a look.

Can I pour water on the ice to speed things up?

Please do not. Water refreezes and hides the original fault, and hot water or any prying tool bends fins and can split refrigerant tubing. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call us instead.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you notice. Warm air, no air, short cycling, a smell, a noise. Details like when it started help us bring the right parts on the first visit.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the return sizing. We test rather than guess, then explain what failed and why in plain language before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then measure temperatures and airflow at the vents to confirm the system holds. If a duct or return is starving the equipment, we tell you what it would take to fix it.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know stucco tract homesMuch of the housing we service was built fast with returns too small for the tonnage installed. That single duct in the hallway explains a lot of weak airflow complaints, and we look at it before we sell you equipment.
  • Marine mornings, inland afternoonsCoastal condos fight humidity and salt air, while inland homes run long afternoon cycles in triple digits. Same system, different failure patterns. We set expectations for the climate your house actually sits in.
  • Diagnosis you can followYou get told which part failed, what it does and what happens if it waits. No hurry, no scare talk. If the honest answer is that the system has a few seasons left, we say that.
  • Repair before replacementMost calls end in a repair, not a new system. We quote replacement only when a repair will not hold or the cost stops making sense, and we explain the reasoning either way.
  • All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
