Two things keep a condensate line healthy, and both are easy. First, change your filter on schedule. Most clogs start as filter bypass dust landing on a wet coil, so a clean filter with a proper fit does more for the drain than anything else. Second, look at the outdoor termination point while your AC is running in warm weather. You should see a steady drip or trickle. If that pipe is dry on a hot day, water is going somewhere else. Also glance at the pan and the area under the air handler for staining. That is the whole habit, and it takes a minute.
How Often To Check And Service It
Look at the drip point once a month through cooling season, and check your filter at the same time. In dusty inland areas and homes with pets, filters load faster than the box says. Beyond the visual check, have the drain line and pan cleared as part of annual maintenance before the first real heat arrives. A technician can flush the line properly, test the float switch, confirm the trap and slope are right, and check the pan for rust or cracks. Homes with the air handler in an attic or an interior closet benefit most, because that is where a slow leak stays hidden longest.
Warning Signs It Is Already Too Late

Why does my AC shut off and then start working again later?
That pattern often means a float switch is tripping when the pan fills, then resetting as water drains slowly. The cooling loss is a symptom. The drain is the problem, and it needs clearing before it damages something.
Does the condensate line matter in winter?
