If You Smell Gas, Rotten Eggs, or Suspect Carbon Monoxide: Do This First
1. Get everyone out of the house, including pets. Do not stop to pack. 2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. 3. Do not flip light switches, unplug anything, or use the garage door opener. Do not light a match. 4. Leave doors open behind you if it is easy, but do not go back in. 5. Once the utility has cleared the property, call us and we will inspect the furnace, heat exchanger, and flue. If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, treat it the same way. Fresh air first, phone second. A headache or nausea that improves outdoors is a real symptom, not nerves.
If the Smell Is Sharp, Electrical, or Like Hot Plastic
Sharp, acrid, melting-plastic smells point at wiring, a contactor, or a blower motor running hot. Shut the system off at the thermostat. If the smell continues or you see smoke, switch the breaker for the furnace or air handler to off and call us. If you see actual flame or smoke coming from a vent, get out and call 911 first. What not to do: do not open the furnace cabinet, do not touch wiring, and do not keep running the system to see if it clears. A scorched wire that cools down is still a scorched wire. We will find the failed part and replace it rather than let it cook again.
The Normal One: First-Run Dust Burn-Off
Across the region we get the same call every October and November. The heat has been off since spring, dust has settled on the heat exchanger and burners, and the first cycle scorches it. It smells like a hot iron or singed lint, it is fairly even through every vent, and it fades within about thirty to sixty minutes. Open a couple of windows, let it run, and check your filter. A filter that has been in place since last winter loads the whole system with dust and makes the smell worse and longer. If the smell is still there after an hour, or it comes back every cycle, that is no longer dust.
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Keep it to these five. Change the air filter if it is grey or you cannot remember the date. Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and not stuck on emergency or auxiliary. Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker and note it rather than resetting it repeatedly. Walk the house and make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or boxes. Clear leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit if you have a heat pump. That is the whole list. Anything involving gas lines, refrigerant, or the high-voltage side belongs to us. Undersized returns are common in tract homes here, and a starved system runs hot.
When to Call Price Air HVAC
Call us for heating repair and furnace repair anywhere we work in Arizona, California, and Nevada when the burning smell lasts past the first hour, returns on every cycle, smells electrical, or comes with a tripping breaker, a blower that will not start, or soot around a register. We also handle air conditioning repair, because a burning smell in cooling season usually means a blower motor or capacitor, not dust. Tell us what the smell is like, how long it has been happening, and whether the system is gas or a heat pump. That gets the right parts on the truck. If a gas utility has already tagged the furnace, mention that too.
That Burning Smell When the Heat Starts — common questions
How long should a dust burning smell last?
Usually thirty to sixty minutes on the first heating cycle of the season, and it should get weaker each time. If it is still strong after an hour, or it returns on every cycle for days, have us look at it.
Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, so the heat exchanger and blower motor run hotter than designed, and the loose dust it sheds scorches. Change the filter and see if the smell clears within a cycle or two.
Is a burning smell from the AC different from the heater?
Usually. In cooling there is no burner, so a burning smell points at the blower motor, a capacitor, or wiring rather than dust. Shut the system off and book air conditioner repair instead of running it.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form with what you notice. Warm air, no air, short cycling, a smell, a noise. Details like when it started help us bring the right parts on the first visit.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the return sizing. We test rather than guess, then explain what failed and why in plain language before any work starts.
- Step 3
Repair and verify
We make the repair, then measure temperatures and airflow at the vents to confirm the system holds. If a duct or return is starving the equipment, we tell you what it would take to fix it.

Why homeowners call us
- We know stucco tract homesMuch of the housing we service was built fast with returns too small for the tonnage installed. That single duct in the hallway explains a lot of weak airflow complaints, and we look at it before we sell you equipment.
- Marine mornings, inland afternoonsCoastal condos fight humidity and salt air, while inland homes run long afternoon cycles in triple digits. Same system, different failure patterns. We set expectations for the climate your house actually sits in.
- Diagnosis you can followYou get told which part failed, what it does and what happens if it waits. No hurry, no scare talk. If the honest answer is that the system has a few seasons left, we say that.
- Repair before replacementMost calls end in a repair, not a new system. We quote replacement only when a repair will not hold or the cost stops making sense, and we explain the reasoning either way.
- All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
- Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
